Colman Cup
Study Hard, Play Harder

-
My friend is visiting me for the weekend. Can he/she participate with my team at Colman Cup events?
-
Unfortunately, participation in Colman Cup events is only open to UTM residence students. It is one of many perks of being a residence student as well as part of the amazing residence experience we want you to have. Your friend may watch as long as he/she is following all the rules set out by the RAWC.

Why am I required to bring and swipe my TCard at Colman Cup events?
-
Having your T-card at Colman Cup events is important for a couple of reasons. It is important for us to be able to identify you as a residence student. Also, TCards allows us to collect attendance at events, which can count for spirit and points.

I keep hearing that I have a sister team. What is a sister team?
-
Every mascot has a sister team, which is a great initiative that encourages every residence student to participate in Colman Cup, regardless of whether or not their mascot team is present. In the perfect world, the use of sister teams would be limited since every team should have enough players to compete; unfortunately, that is not always the case. Let’s say the Beavers have a soccer game against the Hawks but only one Beaver shows up. The Beavers forfeit the match; however, that Beaver should not be penalized for showing up so they can play with their sister team, the Muskrats. Any points gained are solely for the Muskrats team but this helps build the positive spirit of Colman Cup. Sister teams are not in effect in the playoffs and players cannot choose to play for a different mascot if their team is present and ready to play!

I heard teams can win Colman Cup points for showing lots of spirit. What exactly is considered spirit?
-
Spirit can be anything: big or small – it can be something like bringing out 100 students to cheer, helping another student up after they fall, congratulating a great shot from another player, bringing your flag to events, awesome outfits, being loud, being proud, being happy, being a good sport in general etc…It was included to promoteenforce the whole spirit of the league and try to encourage it being fun. Spirit is not deciding factor when it comes to winning or losing a game and the spirit award can be awarded to any team, including those who already won points. Also, the spirit award can be awarded to more than one team. It is worth 25 points and is awarded at the conclusion of a sports season (after 4 weeks of soccer) or a one-day event (Dodgeball).

-
Why do some sports events have special rules that are different from the ‘regular’ rules? For example, a male is not allowed to jump and spike a volleyball in front of the attack line.
-
Sports such as volleyball and basketball follow the co-ed rules set out by the Recreation and Athletic Wellness Centre, the facility where Colman Cup events are held. It encourages fair play and allows everyone to have fun at Colman Cup events.
-
-
What do I do if a player on the opposing team is being overly aggressive during a Colman Cup event?
-
If at any point during any event you feel threatened or unsafe, let the referee know. Colman Cup events can get competitive but we are always reminding people to just have fun. Everyone’s a winner and we definitely want all residence students to participate without worrying about getting injured.

I would love to help out with Colman Cup, but I am not sure if I can dedicate more than a couple of hours a week. Should I still sign-up?
-
Whether you have 1 hour or 5 hours to volunteer, we want to hear from you! Check out our volunteer sign-up page and send us an e-mail.

My mascot group does not seem too interested in Colman Cup events. I am the only one showing up thereforebut my team is always forfeiting. What do I do?
-
Talk to your Don or PAL. There are many ways to promote Colman Cup, especially at community meetings. Colman Cup is meant to encourage a healthy lifestyle, community building, as well as positive relationships between all people on residence. We hope that no team ever has to forfeit a game.

I read on the website that volunteers are recognized for their contributions to Colman Cup. Can you tell me more about what that means?
